5 TIPS FOR GREAT BUSINESS HEADSHOTS

Wondering what to wear to nail the perfect business headshots?

Start by thinking about the image you want to project. What colors make you feel great when you're wearing them? What kinds of outfits make you feel confident and successful? Are you in a traditional, corporate environment or does your workplace have a more creative, artsy vibe? Or are you somewhere in between?

All of these things are important, but once you decide on the look you want to achieve for your headshots, you'll also want to make sure the wardrobe you choose for your photo shoot will photograph well.

Overwhelmed? No worries! I've got you covered!

5 TIPS TO GET YOU PHOTO SHOOT READY

TIP #1: SOLIDS AND/OR NEUTRALS ALWAYS LOOK GREAT

Small, tight prints and stripes do not photograph well. The camera reads them and creates its own unique pattern called “moiré” and it definitely is not something you want in your photos. Some pattern is ok, just opt for larger shapes or prints that don't overpower or compete.

TIP #2: BOLD SHADES MAKE A GREAT ACCENT

A pop of color or darker shade around your neckline will compliment and enhance your face rather than compete with it. Higher necklines are better for a more cohesive and smooth look. (And you won't have to worry about strange-looking cropping or too much bare skin showing.)

TIP #3: YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THE CLASSICS

Navy, blue, dark grey and black look great on just about everyone. Suits, tailored jackets and streamlined tops and dresses (with or without a jacket) always work well for a professional, pulled-together business look.

TIP #4: BRING A GREAT JACKET OR SCARF TO LAYER OVER YOUR OUTFIT FOR EASY MULTIPLE LOOKS

If you're an artist or a more creative professional, bring out your personality with an awesome jacket (think bomber, moto or field jacket) or a colorful scarf, especially if you're opting for an arm-bearing or sleeveless look. You'll want to have options! Just make sure you are keeping your color palette complimentary and coordinating.

TIP #5: AVOID DISTRACTING ACCESSORIES AND LOGOS ON CLOTHING

Too many accessories and logos on clothing can detract from the subject matter (you!) and can quickly date your photos. More is not always better. Opt not to wear large/distracting accessories or logos on clothing if possible.

BONUS TIP: COLOR MATTERS!

Use color to express your personality, enhance your features or eye color, and to help convey the professional image you want to project. But most of all, wear the color that makes you feel confident and successful!

Here are some of the ways color can be interpreted:

Neutrals: earthy, secure

Black: mysterious, dramatic

Gray: cool, even, powerful

White: pure, perfect, innocent

Red: passionate, determined, energetic

Pink: playful, nurturing, loving

Orange: optimistic, social, friendly

Yellow: happy, sunny, intellectual

Green: balanced, growth, money

Blue: dependable, calm, trustworthy, loyal

Indigo/Purple: royal, imaginative, insightful

Gold: successful, luxurious

FINAL THOUGHTS

Be true to yourself! Now that you're armed with knowledge on what wardrobe works well for great headshots, don't overthink it! Get dressed, relax, and have a great shoot!
